Installation of community beehives in the Andes
El proyecto de apicultura comenzó en octubre de 2019 con las 4 asociaciones comunitarias de Aldana, Cumbal, Potosí y Guachucal. The Impulso Verde team selected a qualified beekeeper for the construction of the hives, the rearing of queens and their colonies, and the training of several community representatives.
The beekeeper Oskan Kaymaz, then carried out a first mission to survey the site and validate the sites planned for the installation of the hives to the four partner associations of the foundation.
Twelve members representing the four community associations then undertook two days of theoretical and practical training in early November, at the same time as the hives were installed. Prior to installation, enclosures were built to insulate the hives and better protect them from the wind.
Thus, 18 hives were installed on the lands of different members of the associations. Beekeeping material was also distributed:
- 18 hives with bees and queens installed (16 hives with queen and colony included and two more hives for rescue).
- 16 complete coveralls
- 7 smokers
- 7 levers
- 7 brushes
- 7 hooks for frames
- 7 unoperculating forks
Beyond the essential role of bees in the pollination and reproduction of plant species in this area, the objective of the project is to provide a nutritional supplement to the beneficiary families (honey, pollen, propolis). In the medium term, they will also be able to generate additional income by expanding apiary capacity.
