Colombia is home to 50% of the planet’s páramos, strategic ecosystems that capture, store and release up to 60% of the country’s drinking water. Together with the high Andean forests, they form a vital network for water regulation, carbon sequestration, and the conservation of unique species such as the spectacled bear, the Andean condor, and the puma. However, these territories face increasing pressures from agricultural expansion, mining, and climate change. Who protects them today? The solution grows from the roots: organized communities, driven by women’s leadership and a forward-looking vision, restoring and protecting these ecosystems from the local level.
The Impulso Verde Kuaspue Foundation leads a network of 19 community nurseries in southwestern Colombia, integrating peasant and indigenous associations committed to ecological restoration and biodiversity care. With more than 200 active members – 70% of whom are women – this network has managed to plant 1.5 million native trees on more than 1,000 hectares, recovering watersheds, restoring degraded landscapes and protecting the biodiversity of the Andean and high Andean forests. Each nursery is a node of knowledge, action and hope, where more than 130 native species are reproduced, including several that are endangered.

The impact of this network goes beyond planting. Silvopastoral systems have been implemented on 270 hectares that regenerate soils and promote sustainable livestock farming, compatible with conservation. In addition, agroecological practices or shagras are promoted to strengthen food sovereignty and reduce dependence on external food. This restoration is inclusive: it puts communities at the center, recognizes their knowledge and promotes sustainable economic alternatives that dignify rural life.
Likewise, Impulso Verde articulates two additional strategic lines that reinforce its model of action: development of green businesses, and environmental education and awareness. Thanks to these commitments, more than 10,000 children and young people have been sensitized to environmental issues, strengthening a new generation of guardians of the territory. Likewise, two community plants have been created: one to transform plants into natural cosmetics and the other for the processing of cereals, generating added value and economic well-being in harmony with nature.
Female leadership is a pillar of this transformation. Women not only lead nurseries and production processe. Their active participation has been crucial in building networks of trust, resilience, and collective action. Young people, for their part, bring innovation, energy, and a forward-looking vision, connecting ecological restoration with new ways of inhabiting and narrating the territory.

The Impulso Verde model shows that ecological restoration is most effective when driven by communities, that biodiversity thrives when sustainable economic alternatives are created, and that environmental education is essential for shifting mindsets. Caring for the moors and high Andean forests is not only a technical task: it is a collective, ethical and political act that requires will, alliances and recognition.
Impulso Verde works for inclusive restoration, with communities as the protagonists. Every tree planted, every seed reproduced, every child sensitized, is a commitment to life.
