Singing plants

Plants, as living beings, can transmit electrical frequencies that in turn become musical notes, chords between sounds and silences that, depending on the stimulation, allow for a unique concert experience. This is the experience called the Music of Plants, a sensory activity promoted by Fundación Impulso Verde as part of a connection with nature.
Talking to plants, relocating them to find the best space for their development, identifying the perfect cycle for watering, fertilizing, and pruning them, have been traditions passed down through generations. Some looked at grandmothers with suspicion when they spent time conversing with their plant friends, but it all has a scientific foundation that now allows us to confirm that plants do indeed respond to stimuli in a form of direct communication.
Drawing from an Italian-origin experience, Fundación Impulso Verde, a Colombian-French NGO that advocates for ecosystem restoration and conservation, the development of green businesses, and environmental education, astonishes attendees by demonstrating how, using two electrodes—one connected to the ground and the other to the plant’s leaves—along with a converter, those frequencies turn into notes from musical instruments.
“This is a transformative experience that varies depending on the species used in the exercise and the environment in which the plant or tree is located. Some, like ferns, are more sensitive, but we have also found that in the forest, these frequencies are stronger and more constant,” said Antoine Gérigné, president and founder of Fundación Impulso Verde.
During COP16, held in Cali, Fundación Impulso Verde set up three spaces for an activity the organization called the Music of Plants concert. “There were two open moments for the general public, held at the Pérgola Clandestina, and one directed at a French delegation that we hosted at the Foundation’s Geodesic Dome,” said engineer Gérigné.
Some of the attendees at the special sessions expressed the emotion they felt upon realizing that this was a real exercise and that each plant could feel different, even in contact with certain individuals.
“Children, for example, manage to activate the plants in a special way,” Antoine added.
The Music of Plants is part of the special offering that Fundación Impulso Verde provides for groups, companies, or organizations, complementing activities like meditation, plant electrophysiology, and more.
Thus, by restoring, conserving, and educating, the Colombian-French organization solidifies its role as the Green Impulse* of Colombia.
